Be very, VERY careful of this way of learning.

Let's say you learn to make a shot perfect 90% of the time, but it is predictable/telegraphed every time. You will beat a good number of players, and then you will plateau. To beat the next level of player, you will need to make your strokes look the same.

Unfortunately, with your 90% accuracy perfect strokes, you will probably have 1 stroke that can be retained e.g. clear, and the other 20 or so e.g. smash/drop/punch clear will need to be modified to make it look like your clear.

This is MUCH harder than it sounds. Re-learning a stroke technique after forming a bad habit is incredibly hard to kick. Especially when you will probably go to 50% accuracy (if not worse) with a less than perfect stroke during your transition. Suddenly people you used to beat 21-10 are beating you 5-21. It's very easy then to give up and go back to never learning deception.

I strongly urge you to put that extra effort in now and let your strokes slowly improve, instead of getting a short term improvement now with suboptimal technique.

Just a note to add about you using extra energy and effort - that is precisely what a good player must do. You would much rather get there early 3 times in a rally with a choice of shots, than to get there 10 times later where your stroke becomes predictable, even if it is a perfectly good stroke. In the long run, you are saving yourself energy!

I think most people connect deception with racquet movement, but this is by far the most important part of deception, and it basically goes back to what I said earlier, that you need time. Time is gained through good fitness and footwork to arrive to the shuttle early, so that the same body movement is possible but you have 5 different shots to pick from.

I thought every shot you want your opponent to think how the shot will be executed?

It depends on your strategy and skill set.

If you are able to deceive your opponent, the best case scenario is that you want your opponent to think/guess that you will play, and play another shot, taking away time from him. This is one method of deception where you sell the idea - high risk (as a more complex movement takes more time), but high reward - you’re likely to put your opponent in a much worse position if he falls for your deception.

If you do not possess the skills to deceive (either you cannot convince your opponent of the faked shot, or your secondary shot is weak), then the better form of ‘deception’ is for your opponent not to be able to think/guess what shot you will play at all! Or at least that the shots he thinks you can play mean he cannot close any angles down e.g if you can convince your opponent you can play at least either a straight drop shot or a cross clear, it’s unlikely he can will be able to cause you trouble even if you play a straight clear instead.

Some players are able to anticipate incredibly well though - they can start jumping on your shots even if your shot prep look exactly the same, as they analyse your shot patterns/preferences during a match. This is where fake deceptions are useful since they create a larger catalogue of shots that your opponent may need to anticipate from.
