Can't ask more at 33 + of age to play as good like WCH. With a history of near career threatening injury @ archilles rupture few years back but still able to beat Denmark youngster Vittinghus recently shows he still has the qualities to be a world class player. A good character to emulate for any young players. Good Luck WCH for your next match.

just watched WCH match against PSH, though losing out eventually, his bag of tricks and experience play really got the crowd rooting for him.... if only his touch plays didnt desert him....

all in all a pretty good showing at Swiss Open 2011 packing off Dicky Palyama & Top Seed Jan O Jorgensen....way to go WCH and keep it up!

based on BWF world ranking and super series ranking, WCH is still officially Malaysia No.2 singles player!

Choong Hann set for seventh bow at world meet

PETALING JAYA: Veteran Wong Choong Hann holds the proud record of being the only Malaysian to have finished as the runner-up in the world badminton championships.

And he looks set to become the Malaysian with the most number of appearances in the championships when this year’s flagship event is held in London from Aug 8-14.

Choong Hann, ranked 24th in the world, is on the brink of earning a seventh appearance in the championships and a good performance in the Australian Open next week should give him a place alongside world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei.

A country can have a maximum of three entries if all are ranked among the top 24. And Choong Hann should make his last outing in the championships in London.

The championships will not be held in the Olympic year (2012 in London) and Choong Hann will be 36 when the 2013 edition comes around.

Despite retiring from the national team three years ago to become an independent player, Choong Hann has managed to stay among the top 30 ranked players on the world list.

Choong Hann is himself amazed that he is still the second ranked player behind Chong Wei in the country and he will consider it an achievement to qualify on merit for another world championships.

At this time of my career, I cannot be setting any high expectations. I just hope to continue playing well in tournaments,” he said.

My current ranking certainly puts me in contention for a place in the world championships in August. I hope to put up a strong show in the Australian Open as it will be my only tournament before the deadline for qualification ends in April.”

Choong Hann reached a career high in 2003 as the runner-up to China’s Xia Xuanze in the world championships in Birmingham.

He has only missed the 2006 and 2007 editions of the championships due to injury since making his first outing in Copenhagen in 1999.

Despite not having a coach to rely on, Choong Hann has produced occasional sparks of brilliance.

He made the final of the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold last year, losing to Chong Wei. Recently, he beat world No. 10 Jan Jorgensen of Denmark to earn a semi-finals appearance in the Swiss Open before losing to eventual champion Park Sung-hwan of South Korea.

In the Australian Open, Choong Hann is the eighth seed and he can fancy his chances to reach the semi-finals in a half which has top seed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand.

Seriously I admire Uncle Wong's ability to enter SF in 2 GP Gold tournaments in a row at the age of 34! Too bad no other Malaysian has followed his example.

I can't believe this man has made it to the finals of a GP Gold tournament again! He did it after beating Tommy Sugiarto 21-16; 21-19. Hopefully he takes his revenge against Sasaki Sho(for his Thomas Cup defeat) in the finals!
