Neil, it might be about the gauge of the string, from what i've seen tennis string is quite a bit thicker than badminton string

I don't see (on the webpage) what range of measurements it supports.
I guess it's possible that it may work for badminton if the range goes low
enough (maybe 16lbs?). Does the guy who replied the email know what
badminton is? Maybe he thinks badminton racquets use 12 lbs tension on
a plastic Barbie frame. Anyone want to try anyway? The webpage implied
that it could measure 30 lbs so maybe it'll work for Gade...

Peter Gade strings his racquets at 30lbs, doesn't he?

I guess people often just rely on how their racquets felt when strung at certain favorite tension setting. Sound of the strings being plucked or hit; or whether the string shifts easily after being strung; performance of racquet during games... whatever their experience tells them. Very subjective methods. Only certain way to know tension setting is during stringing, not afterwards. So, I guess you really have to trust your stringer in this.

From loooking at the pictures of the stringmeter device, it looks like there are 2 prongs on the bottom, then a spring and then a guage on top.
I would guess you insert the 2 prongs into the stringbed, then twist the top until some marker matches something (maybe the pointer has to be in line with the strings) and the force required is estimated from how much the spring has twisted.

    That's my guess, anyway.
In which case it could be to do with the thickness of the string why it's not supposed to work for badminton.

when measuring rigging tension on boats, you have a guage which locks into the wires that hold the mast up then pull the instrument out to a line, then you read a number on a guage. This number is caibrated for different thicknesses of wire, which you could find the tension.

It probably just hasnt been calibrated for the thinner badminton wires (strings).

nsmash, were talking about 40lbs. Thats why these string tension devices might work, because it's over the minimum threshold of 30-35lbs.

Any update on how the experiment went?

Or indeed, if you took the experiment any further?

I have to say after getting used to the 40 it was fine, you have to compensate for the lack of feel but smashes were very good and control is good.

BG65, remember AS1's are the only racket that is able to take 40lbs according to the manufacturer.

    Can BG-65 take 40 ? Wow.....
I was thinking BG-65 will probably snap around 35+, but if you can do it with 40, I am sure the stringbed will be feeling like a "wall".

It hurts my hand once the tension is 26+......I have no idea how you can take on that :)

I had two nights of CAB 23 experience. It was strung to 30 lbs: 30 lbs main - mid 10 X 30 lbs cross - mid 10. The string is BG-68 Ti. Man, does it feel different than say 28 lbs PT. It had been a long time since I used 30 lbs PT. Initially, I found it hard to get a booooom out of the racquet. Most of the shots were tinnggg or ponnngg. Later, I decided to swing earlier than usual and managed to get a compromised sound of ponngg and boooom. Back to good old power training again! :D
