Got my DVD's today along with a very nice polo top which I'll give to a pal. Watched the first one and can't say enough good things about Lee's philosophy and opinions about the game and general application towards badminton, people and life.
So, the video quality on DVD is the same as the ones on the net? I thought it would be better. I'm really aching to buy it though
got mine yesterday too. Dunno about the ones on the net, but the video quality on the DVD is very good. I only watched a little bit on Saturday morning before playing in the afternoon, and by applying even a little thing, I think my game improved a bit.
Have managed to bitty my way through discs 1,2, and 3. Stopping and starting again, I hate to say it but the sound quality is putting me off big time. The first one and third one are very good and the second was a bit of a miss. 4th one looks good though judging by the contents listed on the back, afterall, Lee is known for his deception with a racket. The picture on the front is quite funny in the respect that Lee is wearing the England squad tracksuit from when he was a coach there before, it's almost as if the release was put back to take his new position into account What do you think about the sound quality Neil?
I've watched DVD 1, plus a bit of 2. The sound quality is very good, it faithfully captures Lee and all the echoes I found it annoying at first, but I think I can live with it. Possibly a better option in that big hall would have been to use a radio mike so he didn't have to speak so loud. But that might have caused problems getting the audio and video in sync. I dunno what equipment and budget they had.
Hello Dill and Neill, What about his training method an explanations? Are they consequently at high level? We have a coach in our club, but he is "just" a B-Coach. Can the DVD help me to get better, are there information or methods, that a B-Coach doesn't know? I'm not so satisfied with the training we received at the moment. I want to learn by myself beside the training. Should I invest so much money? Thank you.
The only way the DVD will help you is if you apply it with a good coach, a DVD in itself will not help you get better only show you the techniques of basic shots and movement. It is how you apply what the DVD contains is the principle and as a resource it is a good thing to visit every now and again to brush up on certain things. The DVD does go into tactics but at a basic level and the movements to and from shots is not there so it is an incomplete (1-3 discs only have been seen at this stage) work. It is an alternative to reading a book and that is what I would equate it to. Although it gives Lee's philosiphy and personal reasoning about things which by far is more interesting than the DVD's other parts, he explains the thoughts behind what he teaches and that in itself is very rare for a coach. I respect Lee as a coach although I have never been taught by him and have only spoken to him for about 30 minutes on the phone briefly last year and at least he has the belief in himself to say what he thinks about coaching and people and what he expects from people. I think if I were one of his students I would be more worried about letting him down rather than failing, and that for me is the kind of respect he commands.
I don't think you always need a coach. You can practise new stuff in a game, in a warm up, in half-court singles, during coaching... It may be ideal to train with a coach, but not absolutely necessary. I think it is immensely better than a book. A book is too static, and it is difficult to describe many badminton actions/techniques with words and still pictures. Seeing the movements demonstrated in these DVDs is very helpful I have seen the IBBS dvds and the IBF training videos. IBBS knocks spots of the IBF for detail. The IBF videos try to cover everything, so you don't get so much detail. The IBBS dvds don't cover everything, but go into more detail.
I don't know how much a B-coach knows, but I expect LJB knows more. For the money, I don't regret buying them. Compare it to the price of new trainers, or a new racquet, or your current coaching. Or go to www.ibbs.tv and paya few £ to see some of the clips. Not just the previews. I don't think the previews do justice to the full thing.
Sorry Neil I think I might have come across a bit more negative in what I was saying than I actually meant to. The DVD's are good but you need to apply them and in order to know if you are executing the actions properly a coach would be beneficial to make sure everything is in order, an experienced player would also suffice. I do think the DVD's are good but a bit limited and basic, which would be my fault for not downloading any clips first to check out what was going on. And I would certainly say Lee would be better than any B grade coach without a shaddow of a doubt
You brits have convinced me. Made some savings and took the big step. I honestly think it's a good investment. Just by watching some of LJB's clips, they are quite helpful. All I need now is wait
Hi Neil and everybody else who have purchased the DVD: I am looking for a bit more specific comparison between the quality of the video (not audio) on the DVD vs. the clips on the Internet. I have tried converting some of their Internet clips from Windows Media format (wmv) to mpeg DVD. As expected, the DVD video didn't come out very good because wmv files are of a lower resolution than mpeg. I hope IBBS didn't just convert wmv to mpeg but had gone back to their original video and use that as the source for converting to mpeg. Does any one know how they have done it? Thanks in advance to those who respond.
They are high quality. As good as a movie. I have watched them on 14 inch portable and on 40 inch projection TV and they still look fine.
Thanks very much for the info, Neil. You just helped me made up my mind to order the DVD set instead of downloading the Internet clips.
they look OK, but I guess technically they are not as good as movie quality. Each disc is 80-120 minutes on a single-sided 4.7 gB disc, so about standard SP quality.
But what about the shipping charge of 5 or ten pounds? I just want to know because i think i will order it, too. thanks
