Re: Xia : collar up? In Asian cp semis, when Indra was playing Xia in semis, the filipino commentator even mentioned that Indra was going to partner Sigit later in doubles! Did you all notice that many players like Xia, Gopi,Zhang Jun etc wear necklaces and are always fondling them midway thru matches?
Re: Xia : collar up? Candra always tells the reporters that they are very close to each other. It's so nice to see Candra staying till the end to watch Indra's match, even if the rest of the INA squad had gone back to the hotel, cos Indra's matches always happen to be one of the last to be played. Lee HI wears a necklace too... a gold one. but seriously, I think it's, er, not very pleasant to look at. haha. Perhaps all their accessories are for good luck. Works the same way as Xia's collar.
Upturned Collars Yes, I've seen the archive but it's been a while since this subject has been brought up so I'm ressurecting it for the legions of people who haven't commented on this subject before. I did find this very funny when browsing the archive. So the question is who turns their collar up? And why? I've played 3 University teams so far this year and every team has had 1 person in it who wears a Yonex shirt with an upturned collar. No offence to those who like their collars up, but I think it's hilarious, and I can't stop laughing when I'm playing someone with an upturned collar What say you?
Maybe it is a new badminton winning strataegy. If your opponent laughs so hard at the turned-up collar, the opponent cannot play well and so you have an easy win . Ron
LOL what a joke.. the funniest part is when they thought that there was some kinda power flux or bodily function that is activated from the Collar Up motion. i wanna experiment, but i dont' have any collar shirts haha
perhaps it is just personal preference! some people just like to turn their collar up for fashion or no reason.
I've yet to see this behaviour but i will keep an eye out for it - very few players actually wear polo shirtys tho anymore. Neil
Just a personal preference most likely. Their are a couple people where I play that do that, one guy also roll up his short sleeve but only on the right side and clip it w/ a hair pin so it doesn't roll down. People just have "different" idea of fashion.
Actually clipping hair and rolling sleeves can reduce discomfort and improve play. This may be a true winning tactic . Ron
Naa, Sleeveless shirts are very uncomfortable with friction at the arm pits. Also after sweating, I will stink up the place. I like a short sleeve shirt, but if the sleeves are so long that they reach the elbow, then rolling them up a bit so they are above the elbow will make them more comfortable. Maybe the player with the extra long short sleeves bought his shirt in a cheap oversized bin and has to roll them up . I usually buy t-shirts that are too big when new because after several washes, they shrink nicely into size. They are too big when new, but I don't want to roll up the sleeves and look like a dork . Ron
well the sleeve of the guy who roll up his sleeve probably stops halfway at the bicep region, that's pretty short, and he then roll them up until most of the right deltoid is exposed and then he use a hair clip to clip the sleeve. So basically if you look at his profile from the right, you'd think he's wearing a sleeveless shirt but from the left, he looks like he is wearing a regular polo shirt. Hope that made more sense. It's just how each individual achieves comfort level. I once played in a very well-lit gym and I end up wearing colored lens indoor.
Sometimes the collar up thing is just people trying to be cocky, a lot of arrogant players have been known to do it in tournaments! That said, some other players just find it a comfort, or a lucky habit! Its not really my thing, but whatever floats your boat eh!!!
collar up was first started by Xia Xuanze. he mentioned in one of the interview that it gave him a psychological edge. however, i think it was a style thing that Xia was doing. that was when he first rose from no-namer into the international scene, around 2000 time frame.
JWU, So maybe the guy wants to emulate Xia and become a world champion. After all, he has no biceps to show . Ron
