In case you wonder if LCW will ever show up in Chinese Taipei Open GPG, I dug up an old news article from Chinapress, a local newspaper from Malaysia. http://www.chinapress.com.my/20160528/奧運前返世界第一-李宗偉信心飛揚/ As usual, I did my unprofessional translation here. To become World NO 1 before Olympic Games LCW Feels Confident Date: May 28, 2016 Reported by Xu Cai Yun LCW believes that he can get good results from the last two Superseries tournaments prior to the Olympic Games; he thinks that he can be World NO 1 very soon. Once he becomes World NO 1, he will be the top seed of the Olympic Games held in August. LCW said that only seven weeks left until the Olympic Games after the conclusion of Australia Open, he will not play in any tournament but to prepare for Olympic Games in Malaysia. LCW was asked if he would prepare for Olympic Games in foreign country. LCW firmly replied, "No, I will stay in Malaysia. However, I will go to Rio a couple of days earlier."
As it turns out, LCW won Indonesia Open and withdrew from Australia Open. He did become World NO 1 as he originally intended. Even without playing in Chinese Taipei Open GPG, there is no chance for other players to overtake him in World Ranking before 2016 Olympic Games.
Morten Frost: It's the best Decision LCW withdraws from Chinese Taipei Open This decision is made by us as the team of coaches. We believe that this is the best arrangement for him. There is no need to take any risk to participate in any tournament before Rio Olympic Games. He can be more focused on training.
No Chong Wei for Taiwan Open, full news article : http://www.thestar.com.my/sport/badminton/2016/06/21/lee-chong-wei-pulls-out-from-taiwan-open/
Withdrawn from Main Draw: MS • Chen Long [1/CHN] • Lee Chong Wei [2/MAS] • Lin Dan [3/CHN] • Simon Santoso [INA] WS • Jing Yi Tee [MAS] MD • None WD • Anggia Shitta Awanda/Ni Ketut Mahadewi Istirani [INA] XD • None
This GP gold tournament has lost much of its lustre with the the withdrawal of the top three seedings in the MS. Its held under the shadows of the greatest sporting event - the Olympics. I hope the other disciplines would provide the excitement and upsets.
Could be that both Lin Dan and Chen Long wanted to beat LCW once just before Rio but when he withdrew, the other two lost interest and followed suit.
In the Olympic year, the non-OG qualifying tournaments always suffer for poor turnout and withdrawals from the top guns.
Or LD and CL were happy that LCW withdrew so they could do the same? Sent from my Passport using Tapatalk
A fanciful theory indeed. Most likely the top three players withdrew for a very practical reason namely to avoid injuries before Rio 2016.
Maybe not, thinking man, there might just be some truth to it, that's why they enrolled for the same final tournament and only withdrew after LCW did so. To avoid injury, and in the absence of LCW, they don't have to try too hard to win the tournament, take it as a testing ground, practice sessions.
