So one of my friends told me that constantly clearing shots are effective when playing against old badminton players because it will use up their stamina quicker.

    How true is this?

Surely there are exception, but it should work most of the time when the old player isn't too experienced right?

depends on the old guy, how old they are and how tricky they are.

i have seen old guy who can drop you to death from the rear court.

    Very true.
Generally if an old guy looks like he knows how to play, he definitely knows how to play. He may be slower because of age but clearing alone won't get you too far, their far to knowledgeable.

Constant clearing may not work, but repetitively getting him to go back and forth to baseline with clears and net with drops will work much better. That is assuming he doesn't have a better drop than you in the first place...

As Visor said, move them around, old people cannot move well (no offence, I will get old one day), most have dodgy knees and are often strapped. Their backs are also not great. I just clear to the baseline and then do tight drop, it works a treat. Repeated clearing might work the odd rally or so but old people often can learn your pattern and won't work all the time. Around the net, move them side to side, they often cannot turn fast, this works well too.

I might be friends off the court with these guys but on the court I show no mercy, I'm there to win!

    Kindest regards,

    -Ajay-

It's generally true because usually they cannot reply with another full court clear or even a decent clear, making their shots limited and easier to predict and get to.

Yes but isn't it boring to keep clearing in social games?

I suppose you're also assuming that the old guy is going to just simply hit it back mid court for you to clear again.....

With old crafty players, its really not about what you can do to him, but rather more about what he does with your clears... if he's crafty enough, you have simply played a very defensive shot where he may have a choice of drop, cross drop, flat drive clear to both sides of your court, etc......

If he's unable to do any of those things with your clears, then quite honestly, you should not be playing against someone like that in a competitive manner... :D

I have a played against many of these so called older crafty guys who may have weaker legs, but more often than not, their footwork is impeccable....:crying:

This MAY work against any player of any age. If you think they can't move so well, then try moving them. The only way to tell if a tactic works against an opponent is to try it. If you keep losing with your tactics... then stop using them :p

If the tactics are working, then you know how viable it is already, right?

Well, trying to move the opponent is a good strategy in most singles games...;-)

I have the impression that older players have more problems with taking the shuttle low. Most experienced players do quite well overhead and have some good shots there. But with age, some have problems taking the shuttle low and changing direction fast.
So a good mix of clearing and steep stick smashes may be a viable tactic. Anyway, you will try this in most singles games, so nothing too special about playing an older player...;-)

If you clear often enough, and the bird hits anywhere near the back boundary line, the old guy is going to call it out (EVEN IF IT'S IN) every time. He's seen this before and that's his counter.

Over clearing an old opponent won't really work. It's better to mix it up. Just play your normal game without trying to overthink.
