As a beginner I find some of the badminton shot terminology sometimes non-standard (is there a standard?). Here are Anna Rice's videos which explain stick smashes and half smashes (slice smashes?): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZrKgP8IXsg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClGvKxypTyI&list=UUprsl6i5xHgeSviUJlxhkaw
I would say that badminton terminology is fairly standard. To explain these two different shots - a stick smash is played with a "rebound" or "tapping" action - that means there is no real follow through for the shot. It is used to "clip" the shuttle down quickly and steeply. It can be done with a small swing (rather than a full power stroke) and does not normally use full body strength, but instead makes use of the forearm and wrist and fingers for power. The half smash is the same as a full power smash, but where the shuttle is not hit with all your strength - this means the technique is the same as the full smash, but you chose not to hit the shuttle as hard (usually by slowing down the speed of the racket). A half smash CAN be hit using a slice action. It would normally be called a slice smash. Hope that clears things up!
